Effects of Brassica Rapa on Fructose - Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Rats : A Comparative Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Increased fructose consumption is strongly associated with incidence of metabolic syndrome (MS).This study aimed to elucidate the role of turnip (Brassica rapa) on fructose-induced metabolic syndrome. MS was induced by administration of fructose as 10% solution in drinking water for 8 weeks. Three groups of rats (n =8) were administered fructose as 10% solution in drinking water for 8 weeks. One served as fructose fed control while the remaining two groups were treated with metformin (10 mg/kg/day) and turnip (400 mg/kg/day) for two weeks. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were withdrawn for estimation of markers related to MS. Analysis of the data was performed by one way Analysis of Variance and subsequent analysis was performed using TukeyKramer test. The P values smaller than 0.05 were selected to indicate statistical significance between groups. Induction of MS was associated with increased body weight gain and elevated levels of blood glucose, MDA, nitric oxide, total triglycerides and total cholesterol. It also reduced levels of blood GSH and liver glycogen. Brassica Rapa attenuated most of the changes associated with MS. It reduced weight gain and blood glucose, MDA, nitric oxide, total triglycerides and total cholesterol. It also elevated blood GSH and liver glycogen. The findings of this study prove the benefits of turnip in fructose-induced model of MS.

Troxerutin Chronic Treatment Protects against Fructose-induced Metabolic Syndrome in Male Rats
Background and Aims: Metabolic syndrome, a common metabolic disorder, for the serious health consequences such as insulin resistance and lipid abnormalities has been considered as a major clinical challenge with obscure causes. Oxidative stress is an important component of metabolic syndrome, contributing in its development. Troxerutin, a semi-synthetic derivative of natural bioflavonoid rutin,...

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-treatment with curcumin on metabolic changes induced by two different pathophysiological mechanisms in rats (fructose diet and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus). Materials and Methods: Five groups with 10 rats per group were investigated: control group (healthy rats), fructose diet groups without any pre-treatme...

Objective(s): Metabolic syndrome is a multiplex risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Since some dietary fats such as mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) modify metabolic syndrome components the aim of the present study was to evaluate the preventive effects of mixture, kernel and hull oils of wild pistachio (WP) (Pistacia atlantica mutica) as good sources of MUFA on different f...

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome has a high prevalence and and it is accompanied by a collection of clinical symtom, such as obesity, hypertension, increased fasting blood sugar and triglyceride (TG), and HDL reduction, along with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Recent studies have considered the reduction of antioxidant capacity as one of the important causes of the comp...

Objectives: Turnip leaf has been used in folk medicine of Iran for the treatment of diabetes. However,so far no scientific study has been done to support its use in traditional medicine. The present study was carried out to evaluate the possible hypoglycemic efficacy of aqueous extract of turnip leaf (AETL) in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Alloxan-induced diabetic rats were orally treat...
